Today we had a mission: to ride the new Test Track. Mission completed. We got to Epcot around 11:30 and got a Fastpass for the ride for 2:50. At that point the standby line was 110 minutes long. When we actually went back at 2:50, standby was down to 50 minutes. That just shows it was sort of a slow day at Epcot.
Mark and I enjoyed the ride and would do it again with a Fastpass or if the line is 30 minutes or less. We made it a FutureWorld kind of day, riding Journey into Imagination, Test Track, Universe of Energy, and Spaceship Earth. Plus Mark rode Mission Space by himself. We ordered kosher hamburgers for lunch at the Electric Umbrella. What a nice day!
We got home shortly after 6; I ate a quick dinner; and I went to Starliters rehearsal. It's all good today.
Tomorrow morning I have another follow-up visit to the opthamologist who repaired my torn retina. I'm sure I will pass with flying colors and not have to go back again. At least, that's my hope.
We will also have a FANTASTIC evening because we are going to see Mary Poppins at the Bob Carr Center in Orlando. Too much fun planned for tomorrow! I hope to write a very brief blog before 8:30 in the morning when we have to head out to the opthamologist's office. It will give a weigh-in report and that's it.
Nighty Night All.
I lost 105 lbs. for surgery and a healthier future, hoped writing this blog would help me stay focused. The slideshow shows me from my highest of 322 pounds down to 211 pounds. Since my retirement and cancer diagnosis, weight has crept back. I focused on the cancer in 2010-11. Well, now it's Spring of 2015 and I have regained almost all the weight, back up to 284. I guess I should change the title to Weight Loss Journey AGAIN.

Monday, January 7, 2013
Hello, Monday!
I never got around to writing a blog yesterday, not because I was so busy but because it was such an UNbusy day. Every now and then, everyone needs a completely DOWN day to recoup energy and mental attitude. That was yesterday.
First let me say that if you read the last few blogs, you may remember that I did reasonably well Wednesday through Friday with the calories. I also made a plan to get through Saturday night's dinner party. On a school-style graded scale of A through E, I would rate myself a ZZZZZ!! Yes, I truly FAILED at implementing that plan. I overate, A LOT. It was all delicious. My friend Marian brought my favorite bottle of wine, which she and I proceeded to polish off all by ourselves. I won't even list what I ate. It was a lot. I was afraid to get on the scale yesterday morning, but I'm sure anything I dropped Wednesday through Friday was returned in spades on Saturday. I did not get on the scale today either. I think I will just try to wait until Wednesday morning, so maybe I won't have to get so depressed.
Overeating and drinking too much coffee with dessert so late at night destroyed any ability to sleep Saturday night. Mark went to bed at midnight, but I just turned the TV on and proceeded to watch five straight episodes of "House Hunters" on HGTV. I felt drowsy around 2 a.m. and went to bed, only to wake up with leg cramps at 4 a.m. It took over an hour to work them out, even taking the Hyland's leg cramp pills. As always, I took three of the night time ones at 2 a.m. when I went to bed and 3 of the quick-acting ones at 4:15 when I got the cramp. I finally felt like I could lie down again at 5:30, so I went back to bed and hopped up at 7:30 with cramps again. I took 3 more quick-acting pills, walked around awhile, and went back to bed at 8:30. Next thing I knew it was 10:45. I never felt awake the entire day.
I spent the rest of the day eating right (Thank God!), reading, playing the jigsaw puzzle, and watching TV. At least I felt ready to go to bed at 11 p.m. and slept well throughout the night. NO CRAMPS!
Today is a different story. I really did need the slow day yesterday because there are no more slow days for three straight weeks. Tuesday, January 29 has nothing on the calendar except my usual 7 p.m. Starliters rehearsal. My first instinct is to plan something. LOL! Hold me back!!
So I am showered, dressed, fed, and about done this blog. That's good because at 10 a.m. I need to be at the Farmer's Market in the Village Center, selling tickets to a concert to raise money for my cancer support group's Relay for Life Team. I will do that for about two hours, then head home, eat a quick lunch, and go play Mah Jongg until 4 p.m. Then I will go home, put some laundry away, practice some music, organize a notebook, eat a quick dinner, and go to the Starliters rehearsal from 7-9 p.m. Yes, I am back on that well-known retirement treadmill.

Yesterday's Calories...
Breakfast: links 160, yogurt 100
Lunch: tuna 120, salad 20, cashews (9) 80
Afternoon: whiskey 100
Dinner: 1/2 challah roll 80, 1 oz wine 20, salad 25, ribeye steak (7 oz) 450, 1/2 cup peas 60, frozen French fries 150
Snack: 2 sqs dark chocolate 125, medium banana 110
Total: 1600
Exercise: 20 minute walk at a fairly slow pace, calories burned 70
No surprise that I didn't drop any weight between yesterday morning and this morning. Shabbat dinner is always higher than other nights (unless we are in a restaurant, having company over, or at someone else's house) because there is challah and wine and also usually a "fancier" (read higher calorie) entree. The rib steak's calories are often the entire calorie count or higher than my usual dinner at home. So on Fridays, if I KNOW that dinner is higher than the rest of the week, I ought to compensate for that by cutting back elsewhere or exercising more. Clearly I did not do that yesterday. 1600 is a great number of calories for a maintenance plan, but I'm not on maintenance yet.
Truthfully, I have NEVER maintained any weight. No matter what my weight ever has been in my life, it was also either going up or going down. There have been almost no times when I could say I weighed the same for years, or even for months. Either I was eating as I pleased and gaining, or I was counting calories and losing. Maintenance? I have no idea how to do that.
We are going to the synagogue this morning, and I will eat a slightly smaller breakfast. I'm having one less sausage link and a different brand of yogurt, making breakfast equal 200 today. Lunch will be at home so I should be ok with tuna and salad, skip the cashews. Then we are having company late in the evening. They are Shomer Shabbos, meaning they won't drive until after Shabbat ends, and they live about 45 minutes away. Dinner is at 7:30 tonight.
Dinner menu:
Appetizers: garlic hummus, 2 kinds of crackers, celery and carrot sticks, possibly whiskey
Dinner: salad, farro and vegetable chicken chili (we've had it twice before and it's fantastic), Brussels sprouts, possibly wine
Dessert: Stella D'oro cookies and pareve cream horns
Plenty of calories looming up ahead today. Since we did not make it to the gym yesterday, we do plan to go work out after lunch today and walk at least 30 minutes. That would use up about 175 calories. When you read articles about losing weight, most say make a plan when you are going out or facing a challenge. The plan for tonight must include limiting the hummus and crackers, NOT eating a cream horn AT ALL even though they are delicious, eating only one or two cookies, and limiting the wine. I don't need to cut anything out entirely except the cream horn in order to have a reasonable calorie count at the end of the day. I also will not eat the chocolate and banana tonight since dinner is so late. No need for any late night snacks! It's hard to estimate the calories for dinner tonight because I don't know how much of the appetizer and dessert I will eat. I'll let you know tomorrow, I guess.

Good days feel good, don't they?
I had an especially good day yesterday. Honestly, nothing special happened, but it was a good day nevertheless. It was the kind of day when everything I wanted to do got done; I felt in control with my eating; I had nice conversations with friends; and I never felt rushed. What more does anyone need to count as a good day.
I woke up at 6:30 a.m., showered, dressed, and started writing yesterday's blog by 8 a.m. I had my correct breakfast of 4 Morningstar sausage links and a sugar-free, low-fat yogurt, total calories 220. At 8:30 our handyman came to clean out the dryer vent and fix a part of the soffit in the back, total price $50.
For the next two hours, I relaxed, noodling around on the computer and working on my new jigsaw puzzle until it was time to go to our NARFE meeting in Plant City, arriving at noon. We sat with another couple that we have met several times before and hung out with. She is a triple negative breast cancer survivor who has recently finished her surgery, chemo, and radiation (I call that the trifecta!). We talked a lot over lunch about BC, as survivors do when they get together.
I ate the baked tilapia, steamed vegetables, and salad for lunch with black coffee. I was proud of myself for saying no to the bread. The meeting was on balance issues for seniors, and the two Physical Therapists who gave the talk and demonstration were just adorable. So young! They reminded me of Evey. In fact, I bet Evey could have given that talk!
We had an easy drive home, and then Mark went to the grocery store. I spent TWO HOURS on the lanai working on my mystery jigsaw puzzle (thanks Emily and Lowell!). Wow! That sucker is harder than I thought, but I love it. I also ate an apple when I got hungry and not something worse.
Mark came home around 5 p.m., and we watched a lot of TV the rest of the night. He made that delicious cauliflower with pasta sauce dinner, AND he brought home a 70% cacao dark chocolate bar...for health reasons, of course. I ate only two squares, which he doled out to me, and it was fabulous, total calories 125. I also had my usual banana (potassium to prevent leg cramps) and a cup of blueberries. At 10:30 I went to bed, read my Kindle for awhile, and was asleep by 11:15.
The only thing I did not do was take a walk, but it didn't matter. I dropped three pounds since Wednesday, and I'm happy about that. I was in control yesterday, which I have not been in a long time.
In a little over a week, we will be boarding the Disney Dream for Mark's dream cruise! It will be fantastic if I stay in control until we leave, and even more fantastic if I stay in control while I'm on the cruise.
A few days ago, I was looking through some of my old pictures and found one that I had forgotten. I love this picture. Mark and I were driving Evey's car across country to her in July of 2010. This is in front of a museum in Omaha, Nebraska. I didn't know I had breast cancer, only that I had a lump that needed to be removed and was probably benign. We had a contract on our Florida house, and our Maryland house was listed but not yet sold. Life was changing rapidly, but I was happy and confident about the future. I think this picture is motivating to me to try to get back to that weight. I probably weighed about 215 that day. Compare that to the next picture of me from the Magic Kingdom on Tuesday, weighing in at 266. I just have to get back to that happier place and weight.

The year is starting well.
I did everything I said I would do yesterday. I did my weight routine, walked 35 minutes (and saw an awesome gator sunning himself on the bank), ate an appropriate breakfast and lunch, ate only an entree and a drink at the Puerto Rican restaurant, ate a banana and a sugar free Italian ice for a bedtime snack. I tried to estimate the calories, which is hard from a restaurant like that one, and I think it was around 1800 for the day. That's too many to lose weight on a regular basis, but on the first day of a diet it works. I dropped a pound. I'll take it.
Today Mark and I are driving to Plant City for our monthly NARFE meeting at the Outback Steakhouse. We always say no to the bread and have a salad, steamed veggies, and tilapia. I never feel that it's a bad meal. For dinner tonight Mark is making our "spaghetti." That's a low-carb pasta sauce with soy crumbles served over steamed cauliflower. We used to put it on the shiritake noodles or miracle noodles, but we both have decided the cauliflower is better! We like cauliflower; it's cheaper and easier to make; and it has more nutritional value. I highly recommend trying it. Any pasta sauce on cauliflower will taste great.
When we return from the meeting today, Mark has to do our weekly grocery shopping, but when he gets back from that, I hope we can take a thirty minute walk. Walking is the key.
Mark found a pedometer app for the cell phone and decided to track his steps on our walk yesterday. It was 1.2 miles and he used a bit over 2000 steps. He has decided he wants to do that 10,000 steps a day routine. That's around five miles, but it counts all the steps in a day. I'd like to find a good pedometer that knows when you are sitting still in a car and doesn't need to be turned on and off. Mark's program thought he was still walking when we were driving home. Not helpful. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it either. I used to have a cheap one that was extremely inaccurate. One or two steps could just as easily register as 60 steps on it. I want something trustworthy!

So it's Wednesday, January 2, 2013.
We had a wonderful New Year's Day yesterday with Eliot M at the Magic Kingdom. I will post a few pictures of the day at the end of the blog. We rode a lot of rides, enjoyed each other's company, and ate some lovely meals. What more do you need on New Year's Day?
Now it's reality time. It's Weigh-in Wednesday and the REAL start of the New Year. I have so much I'd like to say that I really don't know where to begin. I've also said it all before, so I run the risk of being redundant.
I went back and re-read some of my blogs from last year around New Year's Eve. I made a lot of good points about how I was going to get back on track and do the right things. I did them right some of the year because I went down from a high of 268 in mid-January to 246 in July, but then I undid the good later in the year.
Here's a recap of my weights on New Year's Days from the last five years:
2009: 322
2010: 213
2011: 250
2012: 262
2013: 267
It doesn't take a genius to see where this trend is going.
It was on inauguration day for Obama's first term, January 20, 2009, that I woke up and decided it was time to get out of the 300s. By April 8 I had gone down to 295 and met the doctor who scared the crap out of me. He put me on the path to go from 295 to 220 by November of 2009 for that hernia surgery. After the surgery, I continued to lose weight, hitting my lowest of 205 in mid-January of 2010. Then...you know what happened, and the weight has crept back up. I'm going down a very bad path.
There is a LOT I could say, and I've said it all before. I'm tired of saying it. I'm sort of hoping that Obama's second inauguration day might be just as inspiring. I will have just been home a few days from our cruise on the Disney Dream. I bet I'll NEED to get inspired again at that point. LOL!
Today, I'm eating out with some friends at a Puerto Rican restaurant in Kissimmee that I've been to before. They only had one fish entree that we could eat. It was good, so I hope it's still on the menu. I can't remember what it came with. Mark and I also plan to go to the gym and take a walk. The weather is perfect today, so there's no excuse not to do that. I haven't been to the gym in a very long time, maybe several months. I can barely remember the last time I did the weight routine. That's irrelevant because now it's all about starting over and getting back on track. The first step today is eating right at breakfast and lunch and doing the exercise. How many times have you read THAT same sentence in this blog over the last few years? Dozens of times, I bet.
Enough whining. Here's some pictures from yesterday, which truly was a wonderful day at the Magic Kingdom with an old friend from Maryland.

It's 2013. Happy New Year!
I had a great time at the Solivita street party last night. I did not have a good time on the scale this morning.
I'd love to write a lot about reviewing last year and thinking about the year ahead, but frankly, I just don't have the time. We are leaving in less than half an hour to spend the day at Magic Kingdom. We are meeting a friend from MD, Eliot M, around noon. Our concern is that the the park could close. Eliot has already texted me that he is IN. He got there at opening. KUDOS to him because I know he stayed at Epcot last night until Illuminations was over, and then I have no idea if he partied somewhere else when he left. LOL! I guess I'll find out later today.
So no time to keep typing. I have to finish getting ready and head to the park. Still, I felt that I had to post a little something to wish everyone a wonderful new year. I know some people will be sad to say good bye to the old year and hope the new one is just a wonderful. There are others who are happy to see it go and are hoping the new one is a hell of a lot better. There are some out there who just have no idea what the future will bring. No matter what group you are in, I wish you all love, peace, health, and happiness. And mostly HEALTH because without that, what else is there?
Here's just a couple of pictures from last night:
