Eating at home makes a difference.

I ate 1188 calories yesterday and lost a pound.  It works.  I was even able to eat two popsicles, with sugar in them, and two squares of delicious rum caramel chocolate that we bought in Barbados.  It was a good day.

Mark's appointment with the endocrinologist went well.  He is doing fine and got paper prescriptions to take with him on our trip.  We had fun in the evening at the Shalom Club.  I didn't eat any of the chocolate, even though the table top was strewn with many of my favorite chocolate candies!  We enjoyed the trivia contest, tying for third.  Whoopee!!

Today I'm playing Mah Jongg at the Lago Vista Clubhouse with my lady friends.  Then we are all staying to eat bag lunches together and swim in the pool, if it doesn't rain.  Tonight we are going to Susie and Ed's house for Rummicube and to watch a movie.

A relaxed and happy day!

It's also my sister Flyn's 65th birthday today.  That's a biggie.  She should receive my card and gift in the mail today.  Later I will call her.  She's not on Facebook, so I can't even post good wishes to her.

Restaurants are not my friend.

Yesterday was long but fun.  We had the NARFE Board Meeting followed by a ninety minute rehearsal followed by a quick shower and change of clothes followed by dinner and conversation.  All went perfectly.  I was tired when we got home about 11:15 and crawled into bed at midnight, but it was one of those days when everything was just so much fun!  Including the eating.

But nothing comes without a price, so I am up another pound and a half today to 277.8.

The Big Catch salad at Beef O'Brady's might have been as low as 475 because I had no dressing on it.  Breakfast was only the usual yogurt and Morningstar links for 200 calories.  That left a pretty good amount for dinner, but I went way over it.  I did one thing I said I would do, no alcohol.  The rest...poof!  Out the window.

The first thing I did wrong was eat two good-sized pieces of the delicious cornbread that Boatwright's is famous for and puts on the table right away, but  Mark and I also did one thing right.  We planned what our entree would be before we got there.  We ordered and shared the cheese board appetizer. We split one entree of Vegetarian Jambalaya, and each ordered the seasonal veggies as a side.  The cheese was great, but I ate all but one of the 8 pieces of crostini that came with it.  The veggies were a huge plate of perfectly prepared asparagus spears swimming in oil.  Then I ordered the raspberry sorbet for dessert. It was amazing and also huge!  Although we walked about 10 minutes after dinner, it was not enough to counteract the high calorie meal.  So I was not surprised by the scale this morning.

Today I have no particular plans other than going to the Shalom Club meeting tonight.  If I have any sense at all, I will go take a walk at some point in the indoor track.  Mark has a doctor's appointment at the endocrinologist.  I might go with him for that.

The next four days I will eat all my meals at home.  That's a good thing.  With any luck the weight gained yesterday and the day before will be gone by the end of the four days.  Maybe even a little more.

I tried. I gained.

My day went exactly as planned yesterday.  I also tracked all my calories and thought I made a good choice at Crispers for dinner.  Mark and I both got the same thing, a bowl of vegetarian vegetable soup and 1/2 a tuna wrap.  We thought we were ordering the cup of soup, but we realized as we were eating that we got the bowl.  It also really looked like an entire wrap, not a 1/2.  Maybe that's why I am up a half pound today today to 276.3.  Oh. well.  Today will be worse.  The Big Catch salad that I will eat for lunch at the NARFE Bd. Meeting at Beef O'Brady's is 650 calories.  Then dinner at Boatwright's could easily be over 1,000 even without any fun things like alcohol or bread or dessert.  Sigh.  There's no way I won't be up again tomorrow.  Then I'll be eating at home Wednesday through Saturday before we go out for lunch and dinner at SeaWorld on Sunday.  I hope I can stay motivated through four good days and lose a little more.

Before we went out for Tourist Tuesday on Monday with Susie and Ed, we both saw the dermatologist.  He cut the crusty patch on my face off.  He said he did not like the look of the blood vessels in it.  Mark had all three of his things cut off, two on one leg and one on the other.  He was told they were too "atypical" to leave on.  We should get word if they are ok or would require something else to be done in 10 business days.  I guess that is two weeks from yesterday or July 11.  We are praying for a completely clean bill of health from these.  I do not need to come back at all unless I find something new to be concerned about or if I get a bad report.  Mark is supposed to come back next year for another complete look-over.

We had fun yesterday with Ed and Susie.  Here are a few pictures from the Simply Tina tribute concert and our day out yesterday.

No food worked out yesterday.

The day was great yesterday despite that none of the food choices we had planned worked out.

We enjoyed the movie and then walked over to the Crepe place in the Disney Springs Marketplace.  For no apparent reason it was CLOSED. So we walked back to another new place called BB Wolf's.  LOL!  They had a spicy Italian vegetarian sausage on a roll with grilled red peppers and onions.  Magnificent.  I estimated it at 525 calories, but it was really hard to estimate.

After the movie, we parked at Hollywood Studios and walked to the boat to take us to Epcot.  The clouds were looking ominous, and sure enough, the heavy rain and lightening started up while we were on the boat.  The boat's first stop was the Swan and Dolphin Resorts, where everyone but us and the two captains got out.  They said that we could stay on board as long as we wanted, so we read and chatted for the 90 minutes before they got clearance to move on.  We still made it to the concert in time, which was great.  The rain left and cool temperatures came in.  We took the boat back to the Studios.  That's where we found the other menu item was gone.

We always enjoyed eating at the ABC Commissary because there was a salmon, rice, and broccoli entree.  Gone.  There was nothing fish or vegetarian on the menu, but the kosher options were there.  We ordered the corned beef sandwich which comes stuffed inside a bagel roll and with three sweet potato pancakes on the side.  We both also had the no sugar added strawberry parfait, Mark's favorite dessert in WDW.  We estimated the dinner calories at 920, again very difficult to estimate.  Since breakfast was only 160 and I ate no evening snacks, my total was 1605.  Not bad at all.  Lose It! said I was under my allotment because of all the walking we did, about 4.5 miles.  After dinner, we did Toy Story Mania with a fast pass and then got a great spot to watch the Star Wars fireworks and projection show before heading home very late!

This morning I was down another pound to 275.8, so I am happy.

This morning we went to the dermatologist.  He removed the crusty patch near my left ear and removed three "atypical" moles on Mark's legs.  We will get the results by July 11.  Hopefully, they all come back negative or there could be more cutting.

After lunch we will head to the Maitland Holocaust Museum, then to see the movie Finding Dory, and then dinner, hopefully at a soup and salad place called Crispers.  I should have a good day if we do that.

Movie, Epcot, Hollywood Studios

As Mark said this morning, "I love our life style here."

He was thinking about the fun at WDW that we will have today as well as the fun we have had these last four days since we got home.  We swam and relaxed by the pool all day Friday after doing water aerobics first.  Mark also got his hair cut and worked in the library.  I played Mah Jongg on Thursday and Friday and even won a few games.  It's been a great four days since we got off the train Tuesday night.

I also behaved perfectly with my food these past four days.  I logged everything in and ate about 1200 calories each day.  Although I did not do any exercise Wednesday or Thursday, I did do 40 minutes of water aerobics and 15 minutes of laps on Friday plus 25 minutes walking the indoor track on Saturday.  Today there will be LOTS of walking out in the heat and possible thunderstorms at two different parks.  If the weather turns too nasty, I guess we will come home, but we are taking the backpack with ponchos just in case.

I am 276.6 this morning, which is great.  I am about a pound LESS than when we left for MD.  YAY!

Today  begins three straight days of eating out.  That is not my strong point, but I'm determined to make it work.

We are going to the movie Central Intelligence this morning at Disney Springs followed by a salmon crepe for lunch at the new Crepery in Disney Springs.  After that we will park at the Studios, ride the boat to Epcot for the Tina Turner tribute band concert at 5:30, ride the boat back to the Studios for salmon with broccoli and rice for dinner at the ABC Commissary, and then wait to see the Star Wars fireworks display if it's not rained out.  I am not too worried about this food because there will be so much walking to offset it.

Tomorrow, after a visit with the dermatologist for each of us to look at a few suspicious things, we are having Tourist Tuesday with the Goldbergs on a Monday.  We will eat breakfast and lunch at home and then go to the Maitland JCC where there is a small Holocaust Museum.  After the museum, we are going to see the new Pixar film, Finding Dory, followed by dinner out somewhere TBD.  Tuesday we have our NARFE Board Meeting at Beef O'Brady's where I will eat the Big Catch Salad, a large, salty piece of tilapia on a delicious big green salad, which is listed as 670 calories! That wouldn't be too bad if I ate a small dinner at home that night, but it will be followed by dinner out with friends at Boatwright's at WDW.  We have eaten there many times, and it will NOT be low calorie even if I skip all the fun stuff like drinks, appetizers, bread, and dessert.  I will skip those, but even the entree will be high.  Sigh.  That's part of our life style here, too, eating out far more often than ever before.  If possible, I'll try to get some walking in on Tuesday.

Just a week ago today we were having brunch and a ballgame with Lowell, Emily, and Phil.  Wow!  Where does the time go?

We have returned.

There hasn't been a blog in several weeks.  I hope you are still out there checking back to see if there's a new one.

We had an absolutely wonderful time in Maryland with our kids Lowell and Emily, with my sister Cindy, and our friends.  There was perfect weather the entire time, too.

Mark really enjoyed the up-all-night Shavuot study session at Mishkan Torah Saturday night after we got up there.  The long drive Friday due to D.C. rush hour traffic wasn't much fun, but we rested all day Saturday in preparation for staying up.  15 people made it until the early dawn service, which I think might have been a record.

I played Mahj Thursday afternoon with my girlfriends and broke my long losing streak by winning the first game I played.  That was my only win, but it felt good!  Today  I will be playing at 9:30 this morning with my group here, now dubbed the Merry Mah Jongg Makers.  I hope I get at least one win again.  We also had dinner out with Rudy, his daughter Jen and her husband Casey and their two children.  After dinner, we went to Jen's house, which we had not seen before.  They have a very big beautiful home.

Lowell and Emily joined us at Cindy's house for dinner Tuesday night.  Then we spent all day Saturday with them, playing with their dogs, attending the Linganore Winery festival, and having dinner at a beautiful Indian restaurant called Royal Taj.  Sunday we had brunch in Baltimore with the kids and Emily's dad Phil followed by a wonderful win by the Orioles over the Blue Jays at Camden Yards.  That was pretty much the perfect Father's Day.  After the game, Mark made a wonderful dinner at home with Cindy and Ken.

Our train trip home was quite the snafu on Monday.  It started with low tire pressure in one tire, a faulty air machine that let air out instead of putting it in, a nail in the tire, a quick plug to let us get to the train on time, only to learn it was hours late.  The northbound train had hit a log in GA, damaging the fuel line.  It waited 10 hours for a new engine.  Instead of leaving VA at 4 p.m. on Monday, we left at 2 a.m. Tuesday, arriving in FL at 9 p.m. instead of 9 a.m.  Crazy.  Still, the train itself is always pleasant, and we slept soundly in the coach seats and enjoyed reading and watching a movie on Mark's iPad.

Yesterday Mark got a new tire and had his teeth cleaned.  I got The Works at the salon: color, highlights, trim, gel manicure, pedicure, and facial waxing.  4 1/2 hours of fun for me!

Last night we had planned on leaving shortly after 6 for the synagogue and JCC's joint community vigil in memoriam for the Orlando shooting victims.  I even cancelled the choir rehearsal so everyone could go.  Mark's dentist appointment ended up being nearly two hours late, so he didn't get home until 5.  He was tired and so was I.  We just couldn't bring ourselves to rush dinner and get out the door by 6:15.  Instead we just relaxed and watched TV and listened to another hour of our Michener book, Texas.  Since we are touring Texas for almost three weeks this summer, this book is especially interesting to us.

I gained about 4.5 pounds in Maryland.  I admit I ate anything I wanted.  Yesterday, I behaved perfectly and was rewarded with almost 2 pounds gone already.  I will be eating all of my meals at home today, Friday, and Saturday.  Sunday will have lunch and dinner out, but I'll report my weight on Monday.  I'm hoping that the vacation weight is gone by then.

I only took pictures in Maryland on the Saturday and Sunday with Lowell and Emily.  Here are a few.

Everyone got an actual glass, not plastic, to taste the wines.

Thank you to Lowell and Emily for giving us this day as my Mother's Day present!

Lunch from the food vendors.

I tasted all the sweet wines and picked Mountain Berry as my favorite.  Lowell and Emily bought me a bottle.

Listening to the owner of Linganore Winery on the tour.

Back at their house playing with the pups.  Lowell with his adorable Ozma...

and Emily with her Trillian.

Sunday for Father's Day brunch at the Diamond Tavern, right across the street from the stadium.  Unfortunately, Emily's mother Pat was having too much back and hip pain to join us.

Heading in to the stadium and wearing our really cute Micky Orioles shirts that L and E got us for Hanukkah.

Father and son at a ball game.  That's a perfect Father's Day event.  The weather was great.  Our seats were in the shade.  The Os won!  Mark is wearing the painter's hat that was the give-away for today.  It was a wonderful day!

Wow, where did the week go?

First, I am up 2.5 pounds this week to 277.5.  I'm not surprised because there were many meals eaten out and not a lot of exercise.

We had a nice week with regular things like a few days of water aerobics for exercise and Mah Jongg.  There was also a dentist appointment where I got my two front teeth fixed up.  The painted-on resin looks great but doesn't last forever.  It was three years ago that I had it done before.  If I get another three years out of it, that will be fine with me.

Yesterday we did a double feature movie of Alice through the Looking Glass and X-Men Apocalypse.  Both were excellent. We also enjoyed the new section of Disney Springs and had lunch at one of the new restaurants followed by a night at Animal Kingdom.  It has only just recently been opened until late with a night safari, a new water pageant show with seating, and lights on the Tree of Life. All in all, these are great additions to the park.

So life is going on as usual.  That's the bottom line.

Here are few pictures from the last couple of days of the Bermuda cruise and a few from Animal Kingdom last night.
